Game Night: Saturday 7-13-2002

Our Game night started out on Friday night when I took a trip to Ann Arbor to pick up Puerto Rico. As everyone knows, I have a big problem with Ann Arbor, I never know where I am at. Once again I parked on the wrong side of town. In my defense, I must say, every time I go to Ann Arbor, something is going on. this time it was a car show. After walking around for a while, I stopped at a book store and asked where underworld was. Normally I am good with directions but only ended up at the other end of the car show. A call to the store and a helpful clerk, I was able to find the store with no problems. The things that sucked: I was running out of gas, when I stopped at a gas station the pump didn't want to read me card, I had no cash on me so I had to raid the ashtray for change (.95 for each of the three parking structures I parked in and $1 for a bottle of water). Ok, after buying the game, I headed over to Ray's to meet him and John. It was a long first game because the setup was a bit daunting, but on Saturday night it was a lot easier. I think everyone liked the game a lot.
Puerto Rico is unique in that every round the players get to pick a role card, depending on how many players it can be 6 to 8 different roles. Unlike Citadels, every player gets to use the main action of each players choice, but the person that makes the choice has a special privilege. The main actions of the cards let everyone do things like, taking plantations, bringing new colonists in to work open jobs, producing goods, selling goods, shipping goods back to the old world, building special buildings and production buildings, or just getting money. The good thing about the roles is, if no one take a role card, it gets a doubloon put on it at the end of a round, so no job goes unpicked for very long (solving the problem you have in Citadels!) The main objective of the game is to get the most victory points, you get them by buying buildings and sending goods to the old world. The problem is that you can't put all your effort towards victory points, because like everything, you can't do squat without money. I think that the game has no down time for the players, everyone has an action on everyone else's turn. I don't think we have even grazed the surface of the strategies in this game, I think it's my favorite game since Carlos Magnus.

Saturday was a fun time. Drink of the night was the Frozen Raspberry Tropical Hurricane. Puts a nice fuzz on the brain. We started by playing a 2nd game of Puerto Rico. It is a longer game (90 minutes), but well worth it.
Puerto Rico Winner Ed 51.8 - Don B. 51.0 - Ray 46 - Ashley 43 - John P. 33
Don & Noel pushed us to 7 players, so we hauled out one of the games Don can play (he has a psychosis about card games). No one guessed a damn thing right except Ed, who was too far behind for it to matter.
Heimlich & Co. Winner Ray 44 - Ashley 43 - Ed 38 - Jen 34 - Don 30 - Noelle 29 - John P. 25
Even though it was 12:30, we played one last game. This was the best game of Cloud nine feature many balloon crashes. Note: I LIKE the fact that we played without the optional rules, WAY better. Not trading 3 of a kind for a Pass the Barn! Despite a fistful of cards, Ed missed more rolls than he made!
Cloud 9 Winner Ray 6 - Jen 39 - John P. 26 - Ed 24 - Ashley 18

Impromptu Game Night #2. Ray and Jen are out of town again so we got together for a game of Puerto Rico at my house. This was my brothers first time playing this game, but he came in second. I guess he would have kicked my ass if he had played before. I won again, I guess that paints a big target on my back the next time we play.
