Well, we knew it was going to be a smaller group tonight, and as usual we grabbed the smaller player games. I decided to give a 3rd try to "getting" the rules to Carlos Magnus. The first 2 times I played, they had to clean me off the walls I got massacred so badly. This time, I was smart.  "Wait 'till you get home" smart. I figured out that just like in Risk, it can pay not to be in first and not be the first to commit. Here's the thing about this game. Early in the game it is like a race to dominate in sort of a land snatch mode.  (landsnatching... landsnatching... see snatch, land). Later in the game, all of your moves that help you, hurt ONE of the other 2 players.  Balance until it is time to make a move is the key. First John was almost completely out.  I would only hurt Ed. John alternated and hurt me first. I am on the ropes, but realized how to 'set myself up' and hope for a move by John. John does make the move and Ed goes down "Holding his ass" at the hands of John. I am able to make a finish move.

Carolus Magnus Winner Ray - John P. - Ed (ass in hand)

Pete and Michelle showed up... with cookies and cake! Pete walked into a phone booth, there was a puff of smoke, and out emerged "Sneaky Vodka Pete". Michelle finds Sneaky Vodka Pete very amusing. Actually we all did. They played this fun card game so we could finish our game.

Reibach & Co. Winner Jen 56 - Pete 42 - Michelle 35

We finished first, and played a quick game of this. I spent the game in jail, accused of the bombing of a building that John did to Ed. Argh. John and I forgot to score on our last hands. Duh. I think the big problem was everyone taking a fist full of cards every turn. We ran through the deck like Pete and that bottle of Vodka!

Landlord Winner Ed 38 - John P. 15 - Ray 4

This was the most amusing game of citadels ever. Wackyness ensured at every turn. Can you believe by this score that I had the Least amount of buildings? Michelle WOULD have had 2nd place, but I took the "soldier" on the last turn and killed one of her buildings. The King floated around the table, but everyone seems to love to bitch about their choices.

Citadels Winner Jen 29 - Ray 21 - Michelle 19 - Ed 15 - John P. 14 - Pete 14

Make sure to check out, Ray's Tiki Hut

 Roll Call

Ed John P. Jen (she got pimped)
Ray

Due to earlier commitments, we did not do the pre-dinner gathering. As with most game nights, when there is no dinner few people show. This night, it was Ed, Alias Johnny, Jen and me! Jen sat out. To be fair, Jen wanted to play, we just got too caught up in the new game.

We played a new game Titan. Now Titan had been on the shelf for over a year without so much as a box opening. It was a pleasant surprise!  There are 8 creatures in an arena and by playing cards and bets, you try to get the creatures you are backing to live and thus 'pay off' you wager. Most chips at the end wins. The first game we learned the rules and made major goofs. The second game was fun, but we were still feeling are way though it. The third game was excellent, and we could now explain it to anyone in 5 minutes. It says right in the rules that the game is most fun with the full 5 players, so I hope to play it again soon. Not to worry, we will be playing this again. I can see this becoming a regular.

Titan: The Arena Winner - Not sure, I think all three won one. Ed - John P. - Ray

We then played a single game of Carlos Magnus. It didn't even last 3 full turns. Thus my criticism of this game. Only 3 players, often results in early moves determining the entire game. Ed got position early, and I was out (figuratively) early in turn 2! Ed mopped up and really never even got a fight.

Carlos Magnus Winner Ed - John P. - Ray

Game Night was Tiki Night, this week.

First up was a game of Time's Up!, this was the biggest game we have played yet, 12 people. Wee broke up into four teams of three. We did have a peanut gallery of people that couldn't handle the deep-thought of the game, they had fun playing with... well, lets just say umbrellas. It was great seeing Russ doing Newton's apple. (this is the closest I can come to a final score, I know the tied winners are about right, I just can't remember the numbers.)

Time's Up Winners - TIE - Ed, Jen,  Ray 25 - John P., Laura, Neal 25 - Michelle, Pat, Pete 23 - Eva, Russ, Steve 23

Russ ponders what clue to give!

I think he has it! No, no he doesn't!

Next up, Take 6, the 11 player version. The only problem with this many people, all strategy is thrown out the window. (yeah, like we have a strategy any other time!) We still had a good time with this, as usual, it's a great game.

Take 6 Winner -Your guess is as good as mine, I just know it wasn't me!

Game Night: Saturday 6-30-2001

Games Played

Carolus Magnus
Citadels
Medici
Titan: The Arena

 Roll Call

Ed Don John P.
Noelle Ray Steve

It started out like any other game night. Ed, John, Steve and myself. I was still busy with the kids, so the 3 others sat down and played Carlos Magnus. Steve is obviously a quick learn. When Prich positioned himself into second place (as often he does), Ed was left out in the cold. Steve swept over them towards the end like a tidal wave.

Carolus Magnus Winner Steve 8 - John P. 6 - Ed 1

The four of us then played Titan.  The was the least eventful game of Titan yet, as no one really got into a position where they could exploit the contestants.  On the very last card, Steve eeked it out.  Had he not played the card he did and instead played something else, My card would have changed everyone's place (in my favor of course). It was much closer than the scores reflect.

Titan: The Arena Winner Steve 10 - Ed 9 - Ray 5 - John P. 2

Just then, Don and Noel showed up (with mucho fresh eggs for all!) and they wanted to play a new game.  Fortunately, Medici was new to them.  As you can see, they are a quick learn.  I led after the first turn, but knew I was in trouble as I was spread out over 4 commodities.  Steve had a narrow focus.  Noel was the surprise as she was close to last after turn 1.

Medici Winner Steve 112 - Noelle 111 - John P. 91 - Ray 87 - Don 86 - Ed 71

Citadels was next.  You know, the game where you pick each turn who you are.  The game ended up being brutal.  We had a authentic "zombie" back when the night started.  Since then, we discovered the love of the Cobra's Fang (2 kinds of rum, lime juice and club soda).  It is yummy.  It is also rum.  I started to the right of the king, which is to say, the "dogshit" position.  So, I decided I would take the assassin card (which is often passed in our games) and KILL THE KING EVERY TURN.  Needless to say, this pissed off Steve.  It also had the desired effect  (eventually).  Steve passes the King to Ed.  So now Ed and John keep grabbing the merchant.  I am sitting on 3 green buildings (a merchant goldmine), so I start taking the assassin every time and killing them!  The one time John does NOT take the merchant, I kill him thinking he has it, but also because I see him in first place.  John is furious, stating that he is NOT in first, as his total is not as high as Don's.  I say that he has the most buildings, I did not calculate victory points.  So John says something, and the next thing you know we are wrestling on the ground.  John hits me in the face and bashes my nose, I kick John in the kneecap and he yells, my nose starts bleeding, Ed has to break us up, and then 2 turns later John wins just like I thought.

Citadels Winner Tie Don & John P. 22 - Ed 21 - Noelle 19 - Steve 16 - Ray 15
